Chey had her first cross country meet yesterday. I could tell she was little nervous because it comes across as extreme hyperness. She was bouncing all over the place and could not hold still or stay in one place for more than a few seconds. She was driving me crazy, but making me laugh at the same time because I knew it was just because she was really anxious for her first race. She brushed it all off like it was no big deal, but to her is was.
The 6th graders ran first. There were 31 kids running so it made the starting line really crowded, and she wasn't sure what to do, push to the front, be patient in back. She decided to just stay in the back and go out slowly so she didn't trip over anyone. She was feeling pretty confident because their first meet was at home so she knew the coarse to run.
It was great to cheer her out of the starting line, then the next 20 minutes they were out of sight so we just sat and chatted and tried to keep babies happy. Chey finished the race in 6th place. She was really happy with her placement. It was her best time, at 22:58 for 2 miles. She felt she could have done better, but wasn't sure how hard to go so she didn't burn out, then realized at the end she could have run harder. I told her it was her first race, she will improve and learn to listen to her body and know how hard she can push herself. She was hardly even breathing hard or sweating at the finish. And she had a really good sprint to the end. She was excited to place 6th. The top 6 received ribbons, so she was thrilled to get a ribbon. Then she learned that she was also awarded points for her finish, and the kids with the lowest points at the end of the season are invited to run in the championship meet. This really intrigued her. She is now determined to improve her race ever time.
She will get the chance today. She has her second meet today in Carson. We'll see how she does with what she learned yesterday!! I'll keep ya posted!!
