Nevada History

Kallie and Kassie have been learning their Nevada history this school year. They have really had fun learning about our area. They were excited to learn last week they would be making an authentic Nevada Native American house and tool. All without using any modern helps ie. glue, string, legos, rope, tools etc. So we thought it would be bit of a challenge to only use natural to our area products.

Kallie decided to make a rock house and a mat. Kassie decided on a Anasazi mud house and an arrowhead. At first I thought the arrowhead wasn't possible, afterall where would we find obsidian? Leave it to daddy to save the day. Just so happens a few months ago he found a piece of obsidian on a job site and threw it in his truck. Of course, it was till there!! So she used another rock and chipped away at it until it was a small sharp arrowhead shape. Thomas also stopped at the river on his way home to cut some reeds for Kallies mat.

So the girls have worked really hard the last week collecting rock, sticks, mud, leaves and brush. They mixed their own mud and stacked their rocks and weaved their own mat. We directed them a little and showed them how to make them strong, but they really did most of it themselves. It was actually a lot of fun. Here are the finished results
